The lexical definition of Rajab is 'to respect'. The Arabs regarded the month of Rajab, the seventh month of the Islamic calendar, as one of the sacred months in which they would refrain from trading and fighting. The word 'Fard' means alone, because unlike the other three sacred months for Muslims which are consecutive, this sacred month comes alone. It is generally believed that the event of Me'raj, that is the ascension of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the heavens, took place on a night in the end of Rajab.
